Fork Union Basketball

FUMA graduates make impact across NCAA, professional basketball map

By Jay Edwards, Forkunionbasketball.com

Basketball season is in full swing. Most programs, from Division I to Division III to the professionals, are jockeying for position in the conference races heading into the stretch run of the regular season. From the Naval Academy to the plains of Texas to the coast of Florida to the to Europe many Fork Union graduates are playing a huge part in their team’s success. So who’s hot, who’s not and what are FUMA grads doing on and off the court in the basketball business. Here’s a just a look.

Who’s Hot

10 – Mason Wooldridge, Lynchburg College  (FUMA ‘05) – the junior forward is leading the Hornets averaging 16 points and eight rebounds per game including four 20-plus point performances.

9 – Tanner Ogden, Western Kentucky  (FUMA ‘02) – used to going to NCAA tournament with Bob Knight and Texas Tech, the Hilltoppers director of basketball operations has helped lead Western Kentucky (13-7, 7-2) to first-place in the Sun Belt, and they will have a chance the “Big Dance,”  in March.

8 – Kevin Hogan, Rollins (FUMA ‘04)  – After scoring in bunches as a sixth man, the senior guard is thriving as the team’s go-to-guy averaging 15 points per game while shooting 49 percent from the three-point line including 22-point outburst to lead the team back from a 20-point deficit against Palm Beach two weeks ago.

7 – Brandon McThay, Lamar  (FUMA ‘05) the 5-foot-11 guard transferred twice in his college career never finding a place to fit in. But, McThay has had a career-year this season averaging 14 points and four rebounds per contest, including scoring 20 or more five times.

6 – Ben Stywall, UNC Greensboro (FUMA ‘06) – Stywall has been expected to help the Spartans make up for the loss of All-American Kyle Hines. After struggling early on, the junior forward has turned into a double, double machine recording seven on the season including 19 points and 14 rebounds against Samford and 26 points and nine boards against College of Charleston. Stywall nearly average a double-double at 11.6 points and 9.2 rebounds per contest.

5 – Brian Gilmore, American (FUMA ‘05)  After coming off the bench for most of his career, Gilmore is making the most of his senior season putting up nearly 13 points and six rebounds in 33 minutes per game. Gilmore had 23 points and nine rebounds against archrival George Washington and 16 points against All-American Blake Griffin of Oklahoma. The senior, who is shooting 43 percent from beyond the arc, also had 28 points this month at Colgate.

4 – J.R. Hairston, Towson (FUMA ‘04)  – the senior forward leads his team in both points (12.6) and rebounds (6.8) per contest and has had six double-doubles. His latest outburst came in the form of a 25-point, 15-rebound performance against UNC Wilmington.

3 – Sydney Johnson, Princeton Head Coach (FUMA ‘93)  - after struggling through their non-conference schedule, Johnson has righted the Tigers ship in Ivy League play. Johnson, now is his 2nd year as head coach, has Princeton in first-place at 9-8 overall, but a perfect 4-0 in conference. The Tigers have also won seven games in a row.

2 – Sam Hinnant, East Carolina (FUMA ‘05)   the senior guard is flourishing this season as he is becoming one of the better players in Conference USA averaging 15 points, four rebounds and three assists per game for the Pirates. Hinnant, who has scored in double figures in 18 of 22 games, had 27 points against George Mason and 19 points and seven rebounds in a win over Winthrop.

1 – Chris Harris, Navy (FUMA ‘06)  – the junior guard is putting up nearly 15 points and two assists and two rebounds as one of the leaders of a Midshipmen squad (14-7) right in the thick of the Patriot League race. Harris has had 20 points or better six times this year, including a 30-point outburst at Villanova and 26 points at William & Mary, and should garner all-conference honors.

Sizzling Sophomores

5 – Donovan Monroe, College of Charleston (FUMA ‘07)  the second-year guard has elevated his game for the Cougars taking over the team’s sixth man role. Monroe scores eight points and dishes out two assists per contest including a 12-point, four rebound and five assist effort versus No. 1 North Carolina.

4 – Austin Dahn, Citadel (FUMA ‘07)   the Bulldogs only won one game in Southern conference play a year ago. This season, they’ve already won 10. One reason, the steady play of Dahn who averages nearly seven points and two boards and has started all 25 games this season, including hitting four three-pointers in a win over Samford.

3 – Austin Steed, South Carolina (FUMA ‘07)  after barley getting off the bench as a freshman, has been one of the Gamecocks most consistent post players averaging five points and four boards a game, including a nine-point, five rebound effort in a win against Auburn.

2 – Grant Domsic, Newberry College (FUMA ‘07)   the second-year guard has only started two games for the Indians, but has been their top man off the bench scoring 10 points per game including 43 percent from beyond the arc and team-leading 60 three-pointers (made).

1 – Donald Sims, Appalachian State (FUMA ‘07)  after taking over the starting point guad position as a freshman, Sims has settled into his role averaging 12 points and two assists per contest, including a 29-point explosion in a recent win over Georgia Southern.

20 on 20

Julian Sullinger (FUMA ‘05)  has continued to be a steady contributor to his Kent State squad. The senior forward averages 6.9 points and 4.3 rebounds, while shooting 58 percent from the floor, with a season high 18 points and seven rebounds against UNC Wilmington… Playing point guard as freshman isn’t easy, but Wofford’s Jason Dawson (FUMA ‘08) of Wofford is not only starting but playing well averaging 7 points and 3.6 assists per contest…Mantoris Robinson (FUMA ‘05)  of Winthrop has also been a steadying force on his team scoring six rebounds and grabbing six boards per game with a season-high 16 points against Gardner-Webb… Jermyl Jackson-Wilson (FUMA ’04) of Colorado is having a solid senior season at six points and four rebounds per outing including a recent 12-point, five rebound effort against Kansas…Lane Medlin (FUMA ‘06)  of Hampden-Sydney College has been a steady player for the Tigers all year averaging 6.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. Medlin, who has started 11 games, leads the team shooting 91 percent from the free-throw line…Michael Ellis (FUMA ‘05)  of Mercer has been the Bears most solid reserve averaging six points and two rebounds in 19 minutes per game. Ellis helped Mercer beat both Alabama and Auburn on the road, but had season-high 13 points and eight boards in a win over Kennesaw…Blake Gallagher (FUMA ‘07)  of Western Carolina is giving them a steady 12-15 minutes off the bench including a six-point, 11-rebound performance against Tennessee-Wesleyan… Jeremi Booth (FUMA ‘06)  is among the most productive reserves on Appalachian State giving the Moutaineers 4.4 points and two rebounds a game in only 12 minutes. Booth had a senior high 14 points and five rebounds in recent win against Georgia Southern… James Humphery (FUMA ‘07)  of Missouri-Kansas City has also been a key player off the bench for his team, averaging four points and three rebounds in 15 minutes of action per contest. Humphery’s best game of the year came in conference play when he had 16 points and five rebounds at Centenary… Lemond Lee (FUMA ‘07)  of Concord is also contributing nicely off the bench with 3.6 points and nearly three rebounds in only 10 minutes per game… Ahyaro Phillips (FUMA ‘08)  of Nevada is still trying to crack the rotation on a regular basis, but has been solid in spot duty in most games averaging two points and two rebounds in only seven minutes per game. Phillips had a season high eight point and 12 rebounds in a win over Sonoma State…Josh Sowards (FUMA ‘05)  of West Virginia is a seldom used walk-on off the bench for the Mountaineers, but has a great shot at making the NCAA Tournament with the West Virginia squad under head coach Bob Huggins…Jesse Pellot Rosa (FUMA ’03) is playing great basketball for SISU in the Denmark professional league. Pellot-Rosa had 35 points (16-25 shooting), nine rebounds, six assists and seven steals in his team’s victory over Aayobhoj last week...Carlos Dixon (FUMA ‘00) plays pro basketball in Argentina for Quilmes MP. Boyden is in his first year at Western Kentucky after serving in the same capacity at Eastern Kentucky for three seasons…Tanner Ogden (FUMA ’02) is the director of operations on the Hilltoppers staff with Boyden. Ogden is in his first-year as an college assistant after playing four years at Texas Tech for Coach Bobby Knight… Wofford head coach Mike Young (FUMA ’82) is having one of his best season’s in his 8th year in charge of the Terriers. Wofford, 11-11 overall, 7-6 in the SoCon, is battling to finish over .500 for the first time in Young’s tenure.

On the Air, in the Movies

One of the major reasons for the success of Fork Union basketball, head coach Fletcher Arritt (FUMA ‘) is on the air nearly every week in the Richmond/Charlottesville (VA) area. Arritt co-hosts “In the paint,” with Jerry Miller on 910 AM (in Charlottesville) every Saturday at 9 a.m.during the basketball season. Arritt’s guests include everyone from legendary coaches Gale Catlett and Charlie Moir to recruiting analysts Dave Telep and Tom Konchalski.

Brooks Berry (FUMA ‘97) is also on the air on a regular basis this season in several capacities. Berry, who lives in Charleston, SC, is the analyst on most of Citadel’s home basketball games on 1450 AM. Berry is also doing some television work for “Ram Replay”, where he will do at least four games for Virginia Commonwealth (VCU) men’s basketball team.

Phil Wall (FUMA ‘03) is continuing to create his documentary on Coach Arritt and Fork Union basketball called “The Passing Game.”  Wall plans to make it into a full movie when his project is complete.

Phil Wall takes Fork Union to Hollywood?

The former FUMA and Williams College point guard Phil Wall (FUMA ‘03) is doing his best to take FUMA basketball to Hollywood. Wall, also a Roanoke Catholic product, is making what looks like a phenomenal documentary on Coach Arritt and FUMA basketball. Less than a year removed from Fork Union, the class of 2007 is already showing they belong in Division I college basketball. FUMA, Arritt products

By Jay Edwards

It’s hard to believe, but the 2007-2008 college basketball season is nearly upon us, and once again Fork Union Military is well represented with over 50 active players in the Division I ranks. As usual FUMA will be represented by some of top players in the country. From Dale Solomon to Harold Deane to Jason Parker to the next future Fork Union star, Coach Fletcher Arritt’s influence can be seen and felt from the mid-majors to the top teams in the conferences like the ACC, Big 12 and SEC. And this year is no different.

Ready for More?

5 – Benjamin Stywall, UNC Greensboro – the rugged forward was better than advertised in his first year averaging over five points and six rebounds while starting nearly every game in role player mode. Now, he will get the ball more and be expected to produce like a veteran.

4 – Mantoris Robinson, Winthrop – Coach Gregg Marshall and the corps of Winthrop’s NCAA Tournament team are gone. Now, can Robinson and company help them reload? Robinson, a key backup a year, will get his chance to shine brighter.
3 – Jermyl Jackson-Wilson, Colorado – two seasons removed from Ohio State, Jackson-Wilson will be starting for the Buffaloes after averaging over eight points and six rebounds a year ago. The question? Can he help them to a winning record?

2 – Kendall Chones, Colgate – is just one half of one of the best pair of twins in the country with brother Kyle. However, Kendall, his team’s top player, is on the preseason all-Patriot League, and on a squad that should be dancing in March.

1 – Donte Minter, Appalachian State – 6-foot-9 forward exploded onto the scene in the Southern Conference (SoCon) after transferring from Virginia averaging 12 points per game. This year, Minter will be counted on for more, and could be All-SoCon, and will be expected to lead the Mountaineers to postseason play.

Freshmen 5

5 – Blake Gallagher, Western Carolina… the freshman center is the biggest player (6-foot-8, 240 pounds) on a smallish team, and will provide an immediate presence and depth for the Catamounts on both ends of the floor.

4 - Austin Steed, South Carolinathe 6-foot-8 freshman forward will have an opportunity to play in his first year for the Gamecocks because their frontcourt is very young and small.

3 – Donovan Monroe, College of Charleston – The Cougars lost most of their top talent from a veteran team. Now, Bobby Cremins must develop his younger players, which means Monroe will get playing time right away at point guard.

2 –  Austin Dahn, Citadel – The Bulldogs only return three players from last year’s entire roster. So Dahn will compete early in the season to see who the future resides with. Dahn will get every chance to get ample playing time on the wing.

1 – Donald Sims, Appalachian State – After two prep years at FUMA, Sims is a well-seasoned player stepping into his first college season. After the loss of both starters in their backcourt, the Mountaineers may need him to start right away.

Comeback Kids?

5 – Sam Hinnant, East Carolina – one time Conference USA all-rookie guard sat out last year with injury. Now, the Pirates second-leading scorer in 2005-06, will be expected to play and produce big results.

4 – Jeremi Booth, Appalachian State – the 6-foot-7 forward should be on the Mountaineers top forwards after taking a medical redshirt last year. Booth will be counted to add depth and scoring.

3 – J.R. Hairston, Towson - rebounding machine will add much needed presence on the glass. Former College of Charleston forward should benefit from change of scenery.

2 – Akeem Hemingway, Missouri- Kansas City – After losing most of its backcourt, Hemingway, who sat last year after transferring from junior college, will get every chance to be the Kangaroos point guard. However, some do question if he will fit in Coach Matt Brown’s system.

1 – Michael Ellis, Mercer – Should be on of the top players on Mercer’s team and may be in the conference after sitting out his redshirt after coming from UNC Asheville, where he was named Big South freshman of the year in 2005. Ellis could be one of the top scorers in the Atlantic Sun.

Fork Union “20 on 20”

Julian Sullinger, Kent State… the junior forward came on towards end of the year averaging eight points and four rebounds starting 15 of 32 games, now he will be counted on for more… Kyle Chones, Colgate… the other half of the Chones’ twins, Kyle will be on of Colgate’s’ top players after averaging seven points and four rebounds in 29 games a year ago…Scott Grable, Elon… after a solid freshman season, the Phoenix are building around a strong frontline, and counting on 6-foot-9 Grable, who averaged 4.5 points and started 11 games last year... Chris Harris, Navy… the sophomore point guard will be one of the top players in the backcourt for the Midshipmen after producing 3.5 points per game in limited minutes, should be one of Navy’s top players… Brian Smith, Mississippi… will be counted on to provide depth to strong Ole Miss backcourt… ( Minnesota coach) Tubby Smith’s third son should get most playing time of career in his senior season…  Kyle Cruze, Holy Cross… Like Harris and Smith, Cruze will be an important part of Holy Cross’ backcourt, as the starting point guard, who started 25 games for NCAA Tournament team… Brian Gilmore, American… the 6-foot-8 junior forward came on at the end of the year starting three games, recording career-high 11 points versus Longwood, is expected to provide depth on the wing… Kevin Hogan, Rollins… he might only be a Division II player but Hogan has probably been one of the best FUMA players in the last year, averaging 11 points, while shooting 48 percent from three-point land, for a 26-6 NCAA Tournament team… Lane Medlin, Hampden-Sydney... was also on a NCAA Tournament team, for Division III Hampden-Sydney, the 6-foot-6 sophomore impressed in his first year averaging 4.5 points per game including nine starts to end the season… Phillip Pandak, Citadel… like Dahn, Pandak will benefit the cupboard being close to bare for the Citadel. Pandak should see some time on the wing… James Humphery,Missouri-Kansas City… will also provide frontcourt depth as a freshman to his team which also includes former FUMA star Akeem Hemingway… Brandon McThay, Lamar…might be one of the most unusual stories in college basketball, after playing his first-year at Lamar, McThay went to Kilgore Junior College before returning to the Cardinals this season where he should be a key reserve point guard… Josh Poston, Coker… 6-foot-2 junior guard should be one of the (Div. II) Cobra’s top players after transferring from South Carolina-Aiken where he averaging 11 points and hit 54 three-pointers last season… Grant Domisic, Newberry… the 6-foot-3 freshmen guard hasn’t played for the Indians yet, but he is already making news coming in second in their preseason competition called “Indian Olympics” that includes weightlifting and shooting drills… Adenyi Amadou, Indiana University (PA)… a senior forward looks to be one of the team leaders after playing in every game including nine starts averaging four points and four rebounds per contest… Josh Sowards, West Virginia… after starting his career under coach John Bellein, Sowards, an invited walk-on a year, gets his chance with new Mountaineer coach Bob Huggins. The 6-foot-7 forward will play a reserve role… Kyle Savely, Indiana-Purdue at Fort Wayne… who plays for former Indiana star, Dane Fie, will sit 2007-08 season with an injury.

Players aren’t the only ones getting ready for the season, as several former FUMA players get ready to coach their respective teams.

Sydney Johnson (FUMA ’93) begins his first-season as the head coach at Princeton after serving under John Thompson II at Georgetown last year…David Boyden (FUMA ’99) begins his third year as an assistant at Eastern Kentucky. Boyden was a part of the 21-12 Colonel team that advanced to the NCAA Tournament last year before losing to North Carolina… Mike Young is entering his 19th season overall at Wofford, the sixth as the head coach. Young’s team struggled last year going 10-20, but did beat Big East power Cincinnati 91-90 early in the season.
